The Sphinx Medal of Excellence is the highest honor bestowed by the Sphinx Organization, recognizing extraordinary Black and Latinx classical musicians. Along with a $50,000 career grant, Sphinx annually awards the Medals of Excellence to three artists who, early in their career, demonstrate artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and an ongoing commitment to leadership and their communities.

On March 27, 2024, Sphinx will honor three outstanding artists whose accomplishments distinguish them among musicians in the field: Kalena Bovell, Sterling Elliott, and David Portillo.

2024 Sphinx Medal of Excellence Honorees

“I am flattered, thrilled, and awed to be chosen as a recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence. It is indescribably inspiring to be part of an organization doing such incredible things for the arts; emerging performers; and young, aspiring musicians in this country. Being recognized by Sphinx is one of the greatest honors in my career and I eagerly look forward to my future as part of the Sphinx family!”
